I have heard “Namaste” in my spiritual circles over the years but did not really know what it meant. I asked a few friends who had strong ideas – but all of their ideas were different.
But then I remembered that little internet thingy called Wikipedia.
And no wonder I was confused! It’s worth a look just for the laugh … but I digress.
Namaste: “The Divine In Me – Salutes – The Divine In You!”
A polite bow of greeting or farewell used by Hindus, made with the hands held at chest height and both palms pressed together.
But as it is an ancient Hindustani word – the translation is very open to interpretation.
- I honor the Spirit in you which is also in me.
- I salute the God within you.
- Your spirit and my spirit are ONE.
- That which is of God in me greets that which is of God in you.
- The Divinity within me perceives and adores the Divinity within you.
- All that is best and highest in me greets/salutes all that is best and highest in you.
- I greet the God within.
- I bow to you. The light within me honors the light within you.
And my favorite…
- I honor the place in you in which the entire Universe dwells, I honor the place in you which is of Love, of Integrity, of Wisdom and of Peace. When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, we are One.
How can one small word mean all that! 🙂
This following video is visually amazing and the words profound. Check it out to learn more of the Namaste definition.
I prefer unguided meditation. Mediation for me is at its best when engaged in without a goal. When we let go of the will and the ego that is beside it, we encounter a deeper self that will otherwise remain in the background.
As far as Namaste goes, if we decide up front then we will never truly meet each other. Let us never figure it out. That is my suggestion. Allow the unknown and you have allowed the truth of the moment for no-one knows what will happen next. This will bring forward great wonder and following it will be immense appreciation.
Namaste to All!
Namaste! Namaste is not any form of meditation but a powerful means of greeting each others! It is not just “Hello” or “Hi” but the whole expression of ones body, mind & soul where our Head, Heart and Hands respond simultaneously. It is also a perfect coordination of Eye -Hand movements, respecting human beings.
With lots of prayers and good wishes with my folded hands – Namaste!

There are a lot of meditation techniques – and so we should all do what feels good. That is the most important thing. I would really recommend some soothing sound, like binaural beats or isochronic beats. Check my blog for more info about that, if you are interester; iamcosmos.blogspot.com — take care!
Namaste is a powerful and complicated, but simple word. Thanks for all the deifinitions. Sometimes it’s as simple as “I see you.” I’ve enjoyed reading your posts. I just wrote a post on my blog called “Getting Unstuck.” It’s about releasing old thought patterns; I’d love your feedback. Blessings, Sherry

Thanks Guys, All three of your sites are great. Enjoy the link love and traffic coming back your way 🙂
There are many paths to God. Whether its guided or unguided meditation… We are going to the same place. A better place. Reading different articles may trigger a personal insight. Its all learning. Thanks for helping to build this community.
according to me namasthe is a greeting to anybody whom we meets and shows our affection on others and we can change the moods.
Namaste, to you too Nigel.
Wikipedia can be a very useful tool. i had to look it up also because I kept wondering why the yoga teacher would do prayer hands and say it after a group.
I still am really cautious using it though, not at yoga. it just seems to be quite contextual if you know what I mean.
So I bid you farewell and Namaste!
Ha-ha, I’m just picturing myself at the grocery store – bowing to the clerk after payment (not that they don’t deserve it!) But yes – it helps when the other person is on your wavelength and is likely to do it back. “Bunch of Crazy Hippies!” Ha-ha.
Namaste to you Nigel
I have and always will say Namaste to each and every person as I recognized this as a most sincere and honest blessing on this blue jewel planet that we ALL share.
Thank you for all your words of wisdom, your guided meditations, and most of all for you.
Ahhh… Earth as a Blue Jewel – LOVE IT! As much as ‘going within’ amazes me, I’m completely awestruck by the perspective of the Universe and how lucky we all are to have this chance at life. Spinning around a Sun Star at the exact distance so it’s not too hot or cold, in the middle of infinite space… Blessings to you Ferhn.
Thank you for teaching me the meaning of Namaste. I still dont know how to properly pronounce it but I am looking.
Hi Wes, I found this online to help you;
“It is pronounced as “namastay” with the first two a’s as the first a in “America” and the ay as in “stay”, but with the t pronounced soft with the area just behind the tip of the tongue pressing against the upper-front teeth with no air passing, more like french Sartre or Spanish Norte.” Hope that helps!
Sir, Namaste! Thank you for the interpertation of namaste. It is all about love and peace.
Thanks for the message. Its a powerful and nice definition.
Nigel, I thought it was the first and third meanings out of the list, so thank you for the other one’s.
Namaste Selina x
Hi Selina, yes – it’s amazing how many ‘interpretations’ can be taken linguistically and symbolically.
Exact definition aside… it’s the energy of the greeting that conveys the real blessing. Taking a moment to stop, place your hands in prayer position and bow to another – as they are doing the same in return, is such an honor and a gift to give and receive.
I learnt this while doing my Reiki course, and I use it a lot. To me it means, “The spirit in me honours the spirit in you”. NAMASTE
Hi Josephine, I love your version as it is so simple; Beautiful… and simple. Namaste to you also.
