Was there a point in your life where you made the conscious decision to be more spiritual, or were you wandering aimlessly, only to look up and realize that you were on a spiritual path?
Me? I just took one step at a time and ended up right where I am now. There was no singular life-changing awakening or majestic realization heralded by Angels.
I’ve always been on the straight and narrow, but my youth was filled with sport, drinking, and laughing with my mates. In retrospect, our goal seemed to be not to take anything too seriously.
None of my friends were church-goers and spirituality wasn’t a word ever mentioned. We talked mainly of Michael Jordan, Kelly Slater, the Simpsons and the cute girls at school.
My interest in the esoteric was a gradual progression. It was one gentle thing that led to another. I did not have a friend or a mentor pushing me into specific areas of interest.
I was exploring without a map, following only my heart desire – and I must say, I’ve found some very interesting places.
At this point, I wish to draw a comparison with photography.
My older brother was a great photographer. I had an interest in it for as long as I could remember. I was drawn to photography and before too long … I called it a hobby.
I read some books, took a course, and hung out with other photographers who knew more than I … (as happens with most hobbies) But photography did not change ‘Who’ I was.
Whenever I had the camera in my hand I called myself a photographer, but when I put the camera down, I was just me again.
Spirituality Becomes … Who You Are
But spirituality is different. Spirituality is not something to pick up and put down.
It permeates every cell of your physical being, and radiates into your energetic presence as well.
As you become more spiritual, you change, as does the world around you.
Although I can still ‘hop’ between different circles of friends, be they spiritual, sporty or drinkers, I draw different things from the experience and change the energy of those I’m with.
If the sporty people are being overly competitive, I show them collaboration by example. If the drinkers are looking to become absent minded and negative, I bring them to the present by positive example.
But developing a higher energetic vibration can put some people off-side.
You may well look the same – but you will feel different to be around (whether your friends are energetically aware or not). Those people who aren’t ready to consider change will do all they can (most often subconsciously) to hold on to their experience of normal, even if that means dragging you down.
As well, like moths to a flame, those who wish for a free ride will look to sink in their energetic fangs and steal your energy rather than raise their own (also usually subconsciously).
But does this mean you need to cut the ties with every one of your friends from old circles?
No, definitely not.
But you do need to be more aware of what is happening. It becomes very important to know and feel your own energy.
Put up psychic protection and energetic protection daily, and reinforce it walking into potentially negative situations. Conceal the magnificent radiance of your aura if you are going to be rubbing shoulders with those people who enjoy being negative.
Unfortunately, as every evolving spiritualist will tell you, some really good friends will be lost along the way.
But you must keep in mind that it is not everyone’s duty in this lifetime to skip merrily along their spiritual path – and challenge themselves to scale the mountain of personal and spiritual achievement.
Their path is perfect for them – as your path is perfect for you.
Although you have walked by someone’s side, you may arrive at a fork in the road, and destiny will have you choose different directions.
It’s important to celebrate the good times you’ve shared, and withhold casting judgment on both their choice and yours.
Yesterday can never be changed, but it can shape your ideal tomorrow.
As you continue to climb the mountain, you will meet new people; People on the same path as you. What they want to discuss and explore may be more in line with ‘who’ you are now. Some will need a hand, while others will offer one to you. New friendships will be made.
I’ve cut the ties to some friends I once held dear – but I look around me now and realise the quality of the connections I have developed. I have changed as I’ve walked my path, as do all.
Living for yourself, and living in the present, seems to make these changes much easier to deal with.
If you wish to share any experiences or lessons you have learned please do so below.
But before that I wish to share a little more about my Photographic hobby. Just the other day I came 3rd in the Native Plant category of the Gold Coast City Councils 2010 Nature Photography Competition! 950 prints were narrowed down to 18 to display, and the two that beat me were amazing!
This is my photo that came 3rd in my category, and that’s me with the Mayor of the Gold Coast, Ron Clarke.
