Seeing Ghosts
The smell of camp-fire smoke fills the air… the torch is passed to the next person with a scary tale to tell…
“A young couple was driving late at night… The fog had rolled in and it was difficult to see… A hitch hiker by the side of the road jumps out in front of the car but they don’t have time to stop… They drive right through him… but there is no thud!
The young couple gasps in shock – but keep on driving. A few seconds later the lady screams as she sees the hitch hikers’ hand in the corner of her eye, reaching from the back seat towards her boyfriend!”
RAAAAAH!!!!!
Stories about Seeing Ghosts
We all have memories of ghost tales that scared us as children. Sure, most are simply made up to enliven the imaginations of eager minds, but there are many grown adults who swear by their previous experiences that make them true believers.
I’m not talking about ‘seeing ghosts‘… like Grandpa Joe under the sheet at Halloween… or dodgy ghost photos on the internet. I’m talking about the workers at old hospitals, convents, hotels… who frequently hear unexplained noises, and deal with peculiar smells… Or unrelated people seeing the same apparitions in the same place years apart… Or people who live in houses where the lights and TV go on and off by themselves and objects get moved around.
So… Ghosts… Are they real? Is seeing ghosts something that is possible?
Now Casper was a favorite cartoon of mine – but I’ve not yet seen a floating white cloud with big eyes and a smile.
My Ghost Story
My ghost story is simple.
I was living in a beautiful beach-side suburb in Sydney. Once a week I would jog about 10 minutes down a perfect stretch of golden sand with the waves crashing to my right. At the end of the beach was a rocky headland that jutted into the ocean.
It was a favorite haunt for fisherman… and I use that phrasing with good reason.
My intent was to climb over the fallen boulders and away from the sight of the other 6 million inhabitants. (Whenever I have lived in a big city – on occasion I need to escape). Rounding this remote headland was my way of becoming invisible. I could sit with my back pressed hard against a rock with nothing but the Pacific Ocean in front of me.
But on this hot day as I approached the boulders I looked over my shoulder to check if I would be disturbed while in meditation. Nothing. Great
But for some reason I looked again and was surprised to see a fisherman carrying several fishing rods and a bucket. I quickly averted my gaze as it took me by surprise… but wait… something wasn’t right. He was wearing a full raincoat and dressed for inclement weather. I turned back again to double-check but he was gone.
I stopped on my spot. That was not possible! He couldn’t have appeared and disappeared so quickly.
I ran back to where I had seen the fisherman – to triple check he hadn’t ducked out of sight – but there was nowhere for him to hide. He was gone. He had vanished.
Had I just seen a ghost?
It actually made my head spin – so I headed for the only shade I could see against the cliff face. I sat back to think about what I had just witnessed and the back of my head pressed against something smooth. It was a memorial plaque for a fisherman who had been washed from the rocks in bad weather 44 years previous… to the day.
I had no doubt… I had just seen my first ghost.
No spooky haunts, rattling chains, or see-through floating things. This guy was going to catch some fish!

Seeing ghosts is not an activity I’ve put much effort into.
Have I popped out from under a blanket at midnight at my local cemetery hoping to see another one? No. (I’m really skeptical of ghost photographs on the internet as I’ve seen what a good graphic designer can do), but real information about people seeing ghosts has always grabbed my interest.
When Karen Ellyard wrote a short piece on the topic, I just had to share. Please check her “Manifestations of Spirit” article by clicking the link.
But if you have a ghost story / experience of your own, please it share in the comments section below.
Till next time, have a spooktacular day!

A week ago I experienced smoke (looking as though smoking a cigarette) coming from the floor in front of my TV. I looked to see if something was burning & no. As I watched it grew more intense, then my kitchenette filled with smoke. I went around and checked to see if something was on fire somewhere but nothing. When I came back in the kitchenette It was totally full of smoke. There was no fowl odor no fire. I heard it was from a spirit but my question is, is something trying to contact me? If so what should I do? I would like to have contact, I am very open and receptive.
Wow, what an amazing experience. Firstly, your inquisitive nature seems to have dispelled any fears which is great. Next time, call in your personal guides or guardians and ask them to keep an eye on you while you explore. Stand strongly in your power, and ask politely but firmly that the smoke take a form that is more recognisable or tangible to you. Regardless of the result, ask for a name or a reason for the visit and take the time to listen to the stillness in your mind. It wont work so well if you are running around in an excited panic. To continue, tune in to the energy and see how you feel. What do you think? What do you see in your mind’s eye? If anything makes you uncomfortable, pull back and put yourself into a protective ball of white light. All the best with your adventures! How Fun!!
When I was young we were brought up to believe in the spirit world. And growing up in an old farmhouse built in the late 1700′s or early 1800′s I had always seen spirits of some sort hanging around just doing their thing. But one day it became quite personal.
I had a favorite place that I liked to sit and think. It was a ledge of rock near the vegetable garden. I liked to just get away from my brothers and sisters and yet be in sight so my mother could still see me. I was about 7 or 8 at the time when this happened and even though it seemed strange it was very real. As I was sitting out there one day I Just enjoying watching the birds and butterflies as they flew past me, I happened to look towards the tree line just in time to see a young man in his teens to early 20′s come out of the trees and continue along the edge of the trees. this young man had long dark hair and wore nothing but a pair of tan trousers. He was also carrying a bow and had a quiver of arrows slung across his back. I just stared at him wondering where he had come from. Suddenly he turned and looked right at me. He seemed surprised that I could see him. Then he cautiously raised his hand in a greeting. I did the same and then he turned back and continued on. I didn’t tell anyone that day what I had seen and left it alone for a while.
That Christmas we were at my uncles house which was just down the dirt road from where I grew up having our holiday meal. my father and uncle were sharing stories and the history of the property when out of the blue my uncle said that his house was built on an old Indian burial ground and the farmhouse where I lived was the summer camp. I looked up at my uncle and said, “Well that explains it.” I then told him about what I had seen that summer. He just stared at me in shock. That was the only time I ever told anyone about him.
What a great story Kat – Amazing! Thank you for sharing
made me realise that we both saw spirit – as real as day, without actually ‘trying’ to do it. Interesteing… Nigel.
The “ghost” story I remember best happened when I was a child. I don’t remember exactly how old I was, but I’d guess maybe 7 or 8.
Anyway, my bedroom had a big picture window facing the front yard, and had a ledge big enough to sit on, which I’d do from time to time. Usually just enjoying the warmth of the sunlight, or watching the neighborhood.
But, I can still vividly remember one day sitting there and watching a battle take place in my front yard between what looked like vikings and native Americans. The figures weren’t full, but were sort of smoke-like. They were well-defined anough, though, that I could see things pretty clearly.
I remember just sitting there and watching, almost like you’d watch a movie. There wasn’t any fear on my part, I was simply watching.
I don’t recall how long I sat there, but I remember telling my mom, who has always been very “new-agey”, about it.
I should preface her response by explaining local history for a minute- I grew up about a block away from a lake called Lake Butte des Morts, which is french for “hill of the dead”. The lake got this name after early French fur traders in the region and the native tribe fought a battle there. So, there was that known history of the area being a former battlefield.
I remember telling my mom about the “vikings” and about the scene I had saw play out. She knew that I knew about the battle between the settlers and natives, and said something along the lines of how it couldn’t have been Vikings, and that the battle didn’t take place in the area we were in. But, she never dismissed it, just figured I had it confused, I guess.
Well, fast forward about 10 years, and a land developer was building a new subdivision nearby when the workers came across some native artifacts. So, the developement got delayed while a group of archiologists did a dig in the area.
They found the usual signs of settlement, pottery and such, but also came across a lot of arrowheads spread over a wide area. Shortly after that, they found some metal blades, cups, and other stuff that they couldn’t explain, since the estimated date of the find was well before the area was settled by the French. Eventually, they dated the artifacts, and found that they matched known Viking artifacts from thousands of miles away, in Europe.
The city museum has since put some of the Viking artifacts on display, but doesn’t offer any explaination of how they got way over here in Wisconsin, or why they date back so far before America was “discovered”
Oh, how exciting Brian! – Getting confirmation all those years later. What a great story, and thanks for sharing. It’s funny how people don’t like to ‘change’ history. Im sure some of the people who believed the world was flat, would have sailed in a strait line till their food ran out, hoping to fall off the edge of the world to prove they were right
Australia was first discovered by Captain Cook in 1788… even though there are grave-stones that pre-date it left by the Dutch I think. It would be a hassle to re-print all those school texts books I guess. Thanks again Brian, your input is truely appreciated. Namaste, Nigel.
In response to Brian’s story. I recently saw a show on history channel that said that a group of Vikings did come to America and some settled in the Midwest way before any other groups came here. They found artifacts from Vikings all over the place and they are pretty sure that they were here and that they were killed off by a combination of Indians, weather, and food shortage. It’s all quite facsinating but not surprising since the Vikings were and still are incredible ship builders. The conquered all over the world at one time and were very efficient at it.
When I was a child, my parents moved around alot to different apartments. One of the apartments in particular had a scary spector living in it. I remember that every night when I would be sleeping I would wake up for no reason at all and see a man all in black with a skeleton face standing in the door way stairing at me. Sometimes he would be in the room. I was terrified. I would pull the covers over my head and shake fiercly. I was maybe 10 or 11 at the time. When we moved from that place into a house my parents bought, I never had that experience again. Now I am all grown up with 2 kids of my own and once in a while I dream that I am in that apartment, but the scary ghost is not there, only my family members.
