Benefits of Power NapThis month has been all about goodness for me. It started as an experiment in mindfulness, but it also evolved into having some quality time apart from caffeine also.

I wasn’t a big coffee drinker, but that little lull an hour or so after lunch was killing me. Without a coffee shot I was getting the nods, losing concentration, motor skills and direction.

I tried to combat it with a burst of exercise, but I kept forgetting what I was trying to do, falling over and wandering aimlessly in a daze.

I would seem to come good again at about 3pm in the afternoon – but having just suffered 2 hours of apparent jet-lag, my afternoon was always rushed.

I take pride in my work ethic … so could I do it?

Could I try to have a sleep in the middle of the day?

Power of Saying NoI’m not sure when you will be reading this, but I’m writing it not long after the start of a new calendar year. No this isn’t a post about the importance of setting New Year resolutions – I’ve never really gone for that.

I like to think that I have the ability to make important decisions for my well-being at any time of the year!

The reason this has come up for me now is that I went camping over New Years and really got back to basics. As I strolled knee deep in the crystal clear waters of Station Creek, with is golden sandy bottom and a gentle ocean tide making it perfect to lay back and float down, I re-realized how much I enjoy getting away from it all.

The computer, work, deadlines, expectations, commitments, the phone, the TV … all of it. It’s not that any of those things are bad by themselves, but for me, when they are a constant pressure for too long I get blinded from my life’s true joys.

So the solution would appear to be easy – Take more holidays and find my happy place.

But there is one major hurdle. I’m too busy.

Job and family demands can build up and become overwhelming… Not to mention the constant bills, car payments and rent or your mortgage.

What is the solution?

Well there are many, but a very simple one is to practice relaxation meditation.

With meditation – you begin to feel an inner peace and stillness. It allows you to slow your down your mind and hush the constant mental chatter.

Ultimately, you learn to take control of our thoughts and emotions – and the little bumps in the road of life become much smoother.

Relaxation TechniqueTreating clients with massage therapy is my day job. To keep it interesting, I include energy work, intuition, and where suitable… guidance.

I am not a trained counselor, so I must keep in check what I suggest, but it was only the other day I realized I do give out quite a bit of advice that falls into the category of commonsense.

I guess it was a natural progression as I always give my injured clients ‘homework’. I suggest specific stretches for those with localized dysfunction. There are good stretches that can be done safely to help, or other things that can trigger spasm or pain. I know the difference and people take my advice on board.

I also use other keys to better health, such as for my salesman with bad posture. Every time he hears his cell phone ring (which is very often) he tightens his abs, rolls back his pelvis and pulls in his chin. For a week he had to ‘try’, but now it is now an automated trigger that is making him a better person.

But a lot of the clients I see carry stress and burden with them continuously.

Sleep MeditationsDid you know it takes the average person just 7 minutes to fall asleep?
7 MINUTES! Wouldn’t that be wonderful?

But if it takes you a lot longer than that, and you wish you could nod-off easily, and you crave nothing more than a good night’s sleep to restore your sanity … you have probably already tried the obvious suggestions;

  • Avoid caffeine late in the day
  • Ensure regular exercise is part of your week
  • Get into a regular bedtime routine
  • Drink a warm cup of milk before bed

But what if you’ve tried them all and they haven’t worked?

We have the choice where we place our attention, in the past, present or future. The power to change our lives is in the present; it is indeed a “present”, as it is a gift we give to ourselves.

I have experienced both anxiety and depression throughout my adult life.

I have come to realize how our thinking and the quality of our thoughts play a big role in influencing these states of being.

If you are thinking and feeling negative thoughts and emotions, it can create anxiety which can also lead you to feel depressed.
