Although I have worked full-time as a professional massage therapist for over 3 years, the desire to benefit society and be of service has been there much longer.
(Blurry Dream-Sequence Montage…)
Way, way back … just after the turn of the century (2001) I attended an 8-week introduction to meditation course at a local community college. It really did change my life. So many of the concepts pried my mind open like a crowbar in a door jamb.
How had I lived for so long with NO awareness?
And why isn’t EVERYONE on this bandwagon?
But something very special, mentioned during the course, drew my attention like a young man made of steel to a magnet factory.
Reiki
I was promptly attuned to Reiki soon after.
Was I now compelled to tie-dye all my clothes and float through life oblivious to hardship… no. But people started telling me I was looking good – in that I had an enthusiasm, passion, and zest for helping both myself and others. My eyes were bright and my touch was warm. I felt it – and others could see it.
Meditation had opened my mind and awareness, and Reiki had filled it with positive influence. I could feel energy flow through my body, I could feel it radiate into my aura, I could feel when I was tuned-in, and I was now aware of the energy of others.
The first year of this new millennium was like stepping into a new sci-fi world for me. Things I would have thought of as unreal were now very real…
(Fade from Dreamy Montage to present day)
Reiki in Meditation
Reiki is now part of who I am. It is not a tool I use, to pick up and put down … it is always with me … with everything I do and every breath I take.
I would confidently say it has been the biggest single influence in ‘raising my vibration’.
When I lay to Meditate, the energy I associate with Reiki fills me – and bursts into my aura.
But if you are not familiar with ‘Reiki‘, I probably sound like a tie-dyed hippy claiming it will save the world…

What is Reiki?
I am often asked what Reiki is and what its benefits are.
Reiki is made up of two Japanese words; ‘Rei’ meaning “God’s wisdom or the Higher Power” and ‘Ki’ which is “life force energy”.
If one’s life force energy is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress whereas when it is high we are more capable of feeling happy and having good health.
Reiki is a Japanese technique of healing that is non-invasive, gentle yet powerful. Reiki treats the whole person including their emotions, their body, mind and spirit.
Reiki is natural, safe and can be used by everyone.
Reiki is great to use in conjunction with traditional medicine, it is not a one or the other choice, as it can be very beneficial in treating side effects and promote faster recovery as it activates the recipient’s own healing process.
Reiki is great for treating all kinds of physical illnesses as it not only heals the body but goes to the cause of the illness helping to eliminate the effects of the imbalance, and conditions as well as emotional issues such as depression, fears, and phobias.
Reiki is also great for healing environments or old impressions that have been left at a place or any forms of negative energy and can assist in the healing of relationships. Reiki also calms nervous tensions, and help reduce negative emotions and can also be used to give protection.
Reiki is highly beneficial by helping balance the body and remove blocks that are stopping you fall pregnant, during pregnancy and during labor.
Reiki can also be used to aid in pain management.
The 5 principles of Reiki are:
- Just for today I will not be angry. Anger at oneself or others can create serious blockages in one’s energy. Anger is a powerful inner enemy. Reiki is an excellent tool to remove anger blockages which have accumulated in the body.
- Just for today I will not worry. Endless worry about the past, present and future can have a major impact on health and Reiki is a marvelous tool for relieving worry.
- Just for today I will be grateful. Simple things like thanks, forgiveness, a smile, a helping hand, a kind word shows gratitude and has a healing effect on both the giver and the recipient. Gratitude also brings joy to the spirit.
- Just for today I will work hard and honestly. Working honestly brings abundance into the Soul.
- Just for today I will be kind to all living things.
Reiki is truly for everyone and I have found the more I work with the Reiki energy the more applications I discover it is great for.

Nigel: There are many online Reiki courses – but I’m not going to tell you about them. For me, learning Reiki in a group environment is too valuable an opportunity to pass. Sharing the experience, sharing the energy and learning from the questions of others in the group made the experience so much better for me.
And there are physical attunements, in where the teacher traces sacred symbols over various parts of your body (I don’t know how they do that online).
If Reiki is an area to which you are drawn, look for a local class. Having a master / teacher you can call is very valuable, as will be the bonds and friendships with the others in attendance.
I’m the biggest fan of Reiki. I think it should be taught to children early in school.
It makes people better.

Great piece on Reiki. I have never been able to put in words how Reiki makes me feel, it just is, for me.
Hi Lori, I understand what you mean. Once you have integrated with Reiki Energy, it becomes your ‘New Normal’. Thanks, Nigel.
I am familiar with Reiki but have never taken any classes. I was happy to learn about The 5 Principles of Reiki and will post them in my office at work. At times I feel overwhelmed, upset, and am unable to maintain a positive outlook. I am hoping that these principles will help remind me of what is really important and that I can get through anything taking just one day at a time.
Hi Laura, if you focus on just one day at a time, before you know it you will have a whole string of happy days behind you. That will make it easier to be happy in the present – and plots a great course for the future! I love the simplicity of the principals – and that they cross borders, bounderies and beliefs
Namaste, Nigel.
Reiki – sounds great, and i have read a bit of it. Soon, I will also join a class, and learn much more about it. I feel that it is a call for me as well.
Thank you for your inspiring Website. I do enjoy it tremendously, every time I read it.
Hi Crisna; it very often happens that an idea or topic of interest starts to float around us like a butterfly… We catch glimpses of it, our interest grows, we see it more frequently. And then, one day, it lands on our nose and spreads its wings. When the time is right – it will happen
Namaste, Nigel.
Reiki sounds great, i will probably choose to learn it when i get the chance, i already try and practice will meditating like i try to pass my hands on my stressed shoulders after a days computer and it is already working i can feel this energy now…Of course it can be so powerful and beautiful just like the universal energy flowing through our bodies when we meditate…It’s been a very interestin website i am happy to read all your emails and they do uplift me every time thanks! Keep it up!
Appreciated Gilbert. I hear many stories of people who aren’t attuned who have warm healing hands. To these people especially, I suggest the formal training and attunements, for their natural abilities will have nitro jet packs strapped to them to take them into the future! Go For It!
When signing up for a local Reiki class, via facebook, the moment that I clicked the “Attend” button, my hand chakras started to vibrate intensely! I knew that they were minor chakras, but had no idea what was going on. I was later told that setting my intent activated a spontaneous attunement. Reiki has truly changed my life! I am so humbled and grateful that God allows me to channel His/Her healing energy to myself and others. Performing Reiki on animals fill me with profound joy and humility. Namaste
Wow, that’s great Chris
I love hearing stories like that. As you become more ‘energy aware’, (for which I believe Reiki was my major contributor), you will notice it more frequently. Energetic vibrations that turn into a physical sensation. Thanks for sharing, Nigel.
I am a Reiki 2 and love the fact that it’s just there when you need it be to help others or yourself. I have animals that line up for reiki and if I am watching tv or sitting at the table they are there waiting and walk away when they have had enough.
It is truely a uplifting feeling.
I like the way Karen explains the principles. I think I will place them on my wall also.
Hi Rhonlee… Your ‘animals lining up’ made me remember one of my girlfriends cats. Oliver ran the house before I got there and he wasn’t happy with the new Male Energy in his domain. The only time he would come near me was when I would give him Reiki. It would turn him from nasty to nice in a jiffy
I learnt Reiki one and two in the year 1994 and from that i am giving healing and also talking and promoting reiki, i am also giving Reiki to dogs, cats and one day even to a pigeon which has fallen from his nest. Within few minutes it flew away. Reiki and accupressure will go hand in hand and heel very fast.
My first teacher would Reiki EVERYTHING! Food, indoor plants, the lawn mower that wouldn’t start… I was dubious at first (as an inquisitive mind should be) but it really is just energizing your intent and giving it the gift of action – so anything is possible! Nigel.
I had some reiki massage and I love it, I wish I can learn the tecnique to help others. Thanks.
Having been attuned to Reiki, and working as a massage therapist, I would often have people ask me what heating oil I had put on my hands. Or they would simply ask if I had studied Reiki, as they could feel the massage on a deeper level. it was easier to let it flow, than try to turn it off! A true blessing, Nigel.
Many of the people enduring such health challenges have felt better after they
have undergone Reiki. There is a focus on becoming a conduit for universal
energy and many people use Reiki to improve their health and extend their happiness.
It’s hard to be sold on a bigger and better deal when we’re already living the BIG DEAL.
I love the ego challenges that Reiki presents when working as a healer. Yes we are responsible for the ‘placing of hands on the body’, but one of the keys with Reiki is that the energy Does Not Come From You. It is not You that does the healing. The energy used is that of the universal life force, and it flows through you in abundance into the recipient. You receive healing just as they do. You should finish the treatment with more energy that when you started. If you are drained – you are doing it wrong, and need to look at issues of your Ego.
When giving Reiki to a person you will also feel the reiki benefits. After the treatment you both should feel The energy. I always make sure I close down and ask for any negative / illness / pain to also be taken away from me. Also I make sure the person goes away with there Chakras at the normal level.
Great advice Joanne. Isn’t it a pleasure to be able to work with a modality that helps others – at the same time as helping yourself? Yep
Keep spreading the light! Namaste, Nigel.
