Guided Imagery is best understood if you can imagine a parent reading a story book to a child. As the child listens to the words – without any effort, their imagination creates the pictures in their mind.
They are physically relaxed (often in bed ready for sleep) but they can easily place themselves right in the middle of the story and the action.
When a child is listening to a story they are ‘present’, not thinking of who they will play with at lunch tomorrow, for example.
In this case, the parent is the Guide, and the child receives the many benefits of story-telling, (such as increased vocabulary and scope of imagination), all while their conscious mind is captivated by the words.
Now the process is the same for adults listening to Guided Imagery.
Get yourself into an environment where it is practical to relax. A computer chair, couch or bed is most common. The guide will start the process by getting you to relax, and distance yourself from your day. This is usually achieved by first drawing your attention to your breath – working towards slower and deeper breathing. Then there is usually a physical body scan, to release stress or discomfort held in any of your muscles. And then the story begins.
Just as children have favorite stories and are drawn to specific content (like action or mystery), you can also choose Guided Imagery programs that explore your current interests.
If you have been feeling drained of energy and without direction, you may choose a Balance and Clarity Meditation along these lines…
Guided Imagery Example
“Imagine yourself walking down a beautiful rainforest path. The sunlight is flicking through the leaves above. You can smell the fresh flowers of the forest. Birds sing happily and fly back and forth between the branches. You can hear a small waterfall further down the path.
It is a warm day and you think you would like to have a swim. There is no one else around in this beautiful forest, so you are safe to let your guard down and fully relax. Just be comfortable with yourself. Everything is perfect.
You walk into the beautiful clear and sparkling pool at the bottom of a small waterfall. You can feel that the water is full of good energy… It feels like Magic on your skin!
You lay on your back and float easily on the surface of the water. As you look up to the blue sky you feel your stress and tension leaving your body. Don’t even care what it is being washed away… It just feels good to have it washed away – and be diluted to nothing by the magical water. Feel yourself smile from the inside as you feel the stress leave you. Your smile grows. You feel lighter. You are happy…”
I could go on… but you won’t pay attention to the rest of this website! But you get the idea.
When your imagination follows the words and creates the imagery without effort, you are in the present moment.
You are focused and relaxed at the same time. And this is the primary goal of using Guided Imagery in Meditation.
Guided Imagery is a Process of Relaxation.
You receive all the benefits of deep meditation – and you can do so on your first attempt. If you can sit back and listen to a story… you can do it!
Guided Imagery can significantly reduce stress, allow you to find peace of mind, gain perspective, clarity and insight, alleviate insomnia and feel balanced and fresh… It can be an amazing and fun way to Make Your Life Better!
Reduce Stress – Feel Connected
Well if it was that good, wouldn’t everybody be doing it?
Well the two main reasons people use Guided Imagery are to reduce stress and increase their spiritual awareness. And people do both those things in different ways.
Some people relax by spending an hour gently torturing themselves in a gym, others use drugs, others stare mindlessly at the TV. But the truth is, many people ARE using Guided Imagery and Meditation to effectively change their lives. Meditation circles are flourishing! Online searches are soaring.
