Who is not stressed-out in today’s world?
People who are practicing a relaxation technique, that’s who.
There are many choices, but my personal favorite is Meditation.
I hope you are still with me, since so many just have to hear the word Meditation, and they run for the hills.
They run because sometimes … the thing we need the most is the very thing that we resist.
Can you learn to Meditate right here and now? Well, of course you can.
Beginning to Meditate
The first step is to decide you want to, since intention is half the battle. Then find your comfy and cozy special place, at home or outdoors.
Create a quiet, clean and tidy space for your daily meditations. You can always go sit in a beautiful park, or a forest, or bring a blanket and sit on the beach. All the sounds of nature are the perfect background music for true relaxation.
Find Your Space
Next step is to sit down. If you choose to sit outdoors, you already have music to meditate by. If you are in your quiet place at home, you can play any music you want, as long as it’s slow and pleasant. It’s better to listen to something without words, so there won’t be anything to focus on except the stillness.
Technique
Now close your eyes. This is the most significant step you will be taking on your path to relaxation. This single act blocks out all visual distraction, and tells your mind that you are now taking a break.
Take deep breaths slowly, and be with the sounds of inhaling and exhaling. You will find that there are sounds to breathing, and they all come from within you.
You have already started to relax the mind through the breathing, and the body must eventually follow.
Stay with the breathing, and feel the changes in you. Please don’t allow yourself to think about the changes, just feel them. Going further than that will activate the mind, and your goal is to get out of your mind, not stimulate it.
Thoughts are bound to come in, however the trick is not to follow them. Train the mind to stay with the breath, and the thoughts will go.
Mindset to Meditation
Accept that this is a special time for you and you alone. It’s not about the shopping list, or work, or family or anything else that may be going on, so be selfish and don’t share your spiritual time with anything in the material world.
Relaxation is all about taking you out of the mind, and if you are basically a Type A personality (that is always moving – thinking – doing and stressed) it may be a difficult concept to own.
But as with all new things, be patient. Patience is not the strong suit of those who are stressed out, but this is an opportunity to learn patience. Get to know it, see how it fits you, and you might grow to like it.
The daily practice of Meditation will train you to appreciate patience, among other things. It will help you to release all the factors that keep you stressed and anxious, some of which you can’t even recognize.
For example, Meditation helps you remain in the present moment, or the “now”. This is important because dealing with the present, past and future all at the same time is way too stressful, and really unnecessary, although that is what most people are busy with.
Remember that you always have choices. You can choose right now to live stress free and give yourself the gift of health and inner peace. So go for it, and Meditate.
